Over the last two weeks the news has been completely dominated by the coronavirus pandemic, almost to the exclusion of everything else.
A very different version of “life” is still going on here and, from this week, we will be bringing you our usual round up of the news from Fethiye and around Turkey – everything non – coronavirus related.
Forest fire in Seydikemer
Fire teams were called to a forest fire that started at around 03:00 in Çaykenarı, Seydikemer yesterday.
Strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly and fire teams from the Seydikemer Group Directorate and the Seydikemer Forest Operation Directorate worked to control the fire until the early morning, after which cooling work took place. 25 acres of red pine forest were damaged in the fire.
It is estimated that the fire, the cause of which could not be determined yet, was caused by sparks from electrical wires hitting each other due to the strong wind. The investigation is ongoing.

Work continues on Babadağ cable car project
Work continues on the Babadağ cable car project with the construction of the boarding/exit terminal and excavations for a parking area off the Ölüdeniz road.
In a press release on Friday, Fethiye Chamber of Commerce President and Power Association Company Manager Osman Çıralı gave some further information about the project.
All permits have been obtained for the new terminal. The plans for the cable car suspension connection have been finalized and installation work has been started. 88 trees have had to be felled under the supervision of Fethiye Forestry Directorate.
Work is also ongoing at the 1200m point with initial work on the extension of the cable car track and driver station buildings completed. Electromechanical cabinets are now installed and toilets, maintenance and repair workshop and spare parts warehouse are completed. Wiring of the system due to be completed by an Italian Company has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. This work will be completed at a later date.
Between 1200m and 1700m, tracks, roller assemblies on all poles, and carrier steel rope assembly has been completed. A new 100,000 kw generator has been installed.
At 1700m runway, the cable car landing building, ornamental pool, connection road, prayer room, health container, chairlift line and control room, flight track lock parquet coating, country restaurant and retaining walls are finished. 95 recent of the work at this level is completed.
At 1800m, the flight runway has been renewed. The chair lift return control room and toilets have been completed and the construction of the buffet continues. Viewing terrace and landscape works in the area have been completed and a lightning rod is in place. Work on the planned Meteorology Station has not yet started
At 1900m, work on a pergola and buffet continues, technical specs for a helipad are completed and a 30 meter flag pole has been erected.
On completion of all work, testing and commissioning works will be carried out and the aim is for Skywalk to be opened to the public in November 2020 at the latest after obtaining the operation technical license from MMO.

New water system for Ölüdeniz
MUSKI (Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration) has started work on a 2.2 million TL project, renewing five kilometres of water pipe in and around Ölüdeniz.
Significant construction work is being carried out along the main road down to the beach and along the beachfront. A spokesman is quoted as saying the project is expected to take a couple of months to complete.

4.7-magnitude earthquake shakes eastern Turkey’s Van
An 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Turkey on Friday.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake took place in Van province’s Tuşba district.
Three smaller aftershocks were also recorded. Two minutes after the earthquake, Erciş district was shaken by a 3.4-magnitude quake. Three minutes after the initial shock, Erciş was struck again by a 3.0-magnitude earthquake and again by a 3.2-magnitude tremor.
Turkey is located in one of the world’s most seismically active zones. The country sits along several active fault lines, the most potentially devastating being the Northern Anatolia Fault (NAF), which constitutes the meeting point of the Anatolian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Turkey applies to add 4 cultural values to UNESCO list
Turkey has filed an application for the inclusion of four of its cultural values to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement on Friday that the application included three multi-national values: tea culture as identity, hospitality, and a symbol of social interaction; Mey/Balaban reed craftsmanship and playing; and the tradition of Nasreddin Hodja jokes.
It also applied for ‘‘husn-i hat” calligraphy to be added to the UNESCO heritage list as a national cultural value.
With a total of 18 items on the UNESCO list, Turkey is among the top five countries with the highest number of registered items.
Initiated in 2011, the Intangible Culture Heritage is a UNESCO initiative aimed at recognizing and preserving various cultures and practices.

A message from Fethiyespor Board of Directors said, “We are in a period that we call “health first, human first” and our priority is to keep our players safe. We will do everything we can to keep the Fethiyespor football club alive. We believe the football league will resume once these hard days are behind us. There is a long journey ahead of us but we have goals that we will surely achieve with the people of Fethiye supporting us.”

Turkish football leagues may start in June at earliest
Turkish football leagues could restart in June at the earliest, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) said Friday.
In a statement, the federation said the timeline was set taking into consideration the club’s required training period, while plans for alternative scenarios were also in place.
The aim is to complete the 2019/2020 football season while “prioritizing human life first,” the statement said.
The statement added that the TFF board will evaluate the situation in the first week of May in line with government decisions, recommendations of the Coronavirus Science Committee and in coordination with the Youth and Sports Ministry.
