The Zabita teams, who normally write penalties for those who pollute the environment, cleaned the area in front of Şehit Fethi Bay Parkı in an effort to encourage those responsible to stop polluting the area. The garbage cleaned up was mainly packaging, beverage cans and glass bottles, either thrown from passing cars or simply left behind by pedestrians.

Fethiye Zabita Chief Sadık Bağlan, who took part in the activity, said in a statement, “Normally our duty is to punish those who pollute the environment. Today we have carried out environmental cleaning activities to raise awareness. This area is mostly polluted by garbage from vehicles. We also wanted to help the Cleaning Affairs Directorate teams and the public to be sensitive to this issue. The best cleaning is not to pollute. Our Fethiye is a paradise with its nature. We ask both our guests and our people to not throw garbage in the environment and warn others who throw it.”

Parliament commission passes social media bill

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 26 July 2020

The Justice Commission of the Turkish parliament approved a bill early Friday that regulates social media.

The bill sets a formal definition of social media providers and aims to designate a responsible representative for investigations and legal proceedings relating to offenses on platforms.

It defines real or legal entities, who allow users to create, monitor or share online contents such as text, visual, voice and location for social interaction, as social network providers.

Foreign-based social network providers that have more than 1 million daily visitors in Turkey will assign at least one representative in the country. This person’s contact information will be included in the website in a way that is obvious and easy to access.

Social network providers will have 48 hours to respond to orders to remove offensive content.

Providers will also take necessary measures to store data on users in Turkey inside the country.

Administrative fines for providers who fail to meet obligations will be raised to encourage compliance. Previously, fines were between 10,000 -1 00,000 Turkish lira ($1,500 – $15,000), but the amount will now be between 1 million – 10 million lira ($146,165 – $1,461,650).

Turkish leaders have long pushed for reforms, and recently pressed the issue after insults of family members were posted online.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 26 July 2020

A website set up by the Health Ministry allowing swimmers to locate areas safe for swimming has now been updated. Whether private or public, citizens can find out about the quality of water in just a few clicks at the ministry’s yuzme.saglik.gov.tr

The Swimming Water Tracking System allows users to search for locations and offers results based on water analyses. Currently, 35 provinces are included in the system, which classifies waters from A, B, C, or D – with Class A representing top quality.

The majority of swimming areas are found in Class A, with none currently considered Class D.

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of the swimming season when beaches are opened from May or June. Since this time, ministry officials have regularly been testing the water for pollution.
