Turkey to plant over 250 million saplings after devastating wildfires

Turkey plans to plant a total of 252 million saplings – three saplings for each Turkish citizen – by the end of the year as part of the “Breath for the Future” campaign, President Erdoğan told reporters on August 6 at a press conference in Istanbul.

Turkey has been fighting over 200 forest fires in the south and southwest of the country since July 28, destroying thousands of hectares of forestry.

The president highlighted that the government has planted 5.4 billion trees to date, stating that forestation works will continue from the end of October this year.

Recalling Article 169 of the constitution, Erdoğan stressed that the burnt areas can’t be used for other purposes and that the state would plant trees in line with the natural plant cover of these regions.

Turkey’s tourist, revenue target remains unchanged

Turkey’s annual target of attracting 25 million tourists and $20 billion revenue remains unchanged, the minister of culture and tourism said on Friday.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy spoke to journalists after a meeting with sector representatives from tourism resorts in the coastal town of Marmaris in the southern Muğla province, on the country’s current progress and tourism goals for 2021.

He said tourism goals are on track as the country is expected to have reached the tourist count up to 12.5 million by the end of July, with the number expected to rise in August and September.

Foreign arrivals surged nearly 27.1% year-on-year in the first half of this year as nearly 5.8 million foreign nationals visited the country, the data showed. More than 2 million tourists arrived in June alone.

To a question on the ongoing wildfires, Ersoy said they are contained in Marmaris and efforts are underway to put out the fire. It is also important to repair the damaged green areas, he added.

Ersoy said the government would move fast to ensure losses and damages are recouped rapidly.

If things go according to the plan, the minister asserted that the tourist and revenue target will be met.

Turkey’s ‘Dr. House’ gives hope to animals with hard-to-treat conditions

The Istanbul clinic of Turkish veterinarian Kursat Ozer has turned into a haven for owners desperate to find a cure for their pets’ mysterious ailments, making him like a veterinary version of Dr House, the famed TV disease sleuth.

Ozer and his 15-member team are renowned for rescuing animals who find themselves near death, afflicted with illnesses that are hard to diagnose.

Ozer, 57, and his team in the working-class Zeytinburnu district on the city’s European side work hard to treat cats, dogs, birds, and even the occasional iguana.

He opened the doors to his clinic for Anadolu Agency to mark International Cat Day on Sunday – an occasion dedicated to our favourite felines by the International Fund for Animal Welfare since 2002.

Busenaz Sürmeneli wins Turkey’s first-ever boxing gold at the Olympics by defeating China’s Gu Hong at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

Sürmeneli won the final 3:0 with two even scorecards after a bout filled with holding and awkward exchanges. They were caused almost completely by Gu, whose awkward, hold-heavy style confounded opponents on her way to silver.

Gu was docked a point early in the second round for holding. Sürmeneli battered Gu late in the second round with the power and athleticism that made her arguably the most impressive fighter in the 100-woman Tokyo field.

An emotional Sürmeneli collapsed to the floor and banged the canvas when her victory was announced, before dissolving into tears.
