Turkey launches aid campaign for disaster-hit citizens

The death toll from mid-week floods in the Black Sea provinces of Kastamonu, Sinop and Bartın reached 66 late on Sunday, while recovery, search and rescue efforts are still underway in towns devastated by torrential rains that destroyed buildings, roads and bridges. A total of 62 people are reported to be still missing in Kastamonu, along with 14 in Sinop.
Floodwaters carried away people, tore down buildings near streams and wreaked havoc in an area spanning from Bartın in the west of the region to Sinop in the east. Kastamonu was the province hit hardest by the floods triggered by torrential rains mid-week.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli had good news on Thursday for the nation mourning the loss of thousands of hectares of forests to wildfires, stating that the last large-scale blaze in the Köyceğiz district of Muğla had been brought under control. Nine people were killed in the fires in Antalya and Muğla. The fires took a heavy toll on wildlife and livestock too. In seven cities where the damage assessment has been completed, nearly 5,000 cattle, some 8,000 beehives and around 30,000 birds were wiped out.
The massive recovery task of reconstruction of homes lost and reforestation of the hundreds of thousands of forests destroyed is just beginning.
The government has launched an aid campaign for citizens who have been affected by fire and flood disasters in Turkey, a decree published in the Official Gazette said on August. 13.
Individuals and organizations will also be able to make cash donations for the campaign. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) will run the campaign.
A statement by AFAD said that “aid will be made through warehouses to be created in disaster areas, and cash aid will be made through the announced accounts.”

Expert calls for measures after fatal bus crashes in Turkey

Initial findings show that two fatal bus crashes in Turkey last week were caused by driver error.
29 people lost their lives in the accidents, six people died in Manisa on Friday, August 6 and another 15 died in Balıkesir on Sunday, August 8. Also on Sunday, a minibus crash claimed eight lives in Izmir.
Experts say drivers forced to work long hours, driving old bus models without sufficient sleep may be because of the accidents. Traffic safety expert, Alpay Lök called for the European inspection system that mandates inspections should be adopted, as it improves the drivers’ working conditions.
Traffic accidents claim hundreds of lives every year in the country. Though the road infrastructure, which was among the culprits of the accidents in the past, was improved, reckless driving remains the main cause of the crashes. During the nine-day Qurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha) holiday last month alone, 46 people were killed as millions of Turks took to the roads to visit their hometowns for the holiday.

Baby flamingos in Turkey learn to fly at ‘natural school’

18,000 flamingos that hatched two months ago are learning to fly at a “natural school” at the Izmir Bird Sanctuary, one of the leading breeding sites located on the Gediz River Delta.
The sanctuary, one of two breeding sites in Turkey, had disappeared over time due to erosion from waves. In 2012, the world’s biggest artificial breeding island, encompassing an area of 6,500 square meters (70,000 square feet), was created. This helped the flamingos to recover in numbers.
The artificial island was cleaned of dangerous objects to protect the flamingos while they make their nests in preparation for the incubation period. Since May, the island has hosted thousands of flamingos. Humans are not allowed to enter the incubation island.
The precise numbers of flamingos will be determined when they leave the island and the official counting of the nests begins. According to remote observations of the island, around 18,000 flaminglets were estimated to be born. After hatching, the young flamingos, who are a smokey black colour for the first month, head to the water. They spend most of their time together in the water and near the island in their “natural school.” The youngsters spend their days wandering around the island feeding themselves. They also exercise while imitating the adults by sprinting in the water and attempting to spread their wings.

July was earth’s hottest month on record
Last month was Earth’s hottest month on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on Friday.
For the first time since record-keeping began 142 years ago, land and ocean-surface temperatures in July combined were 1.67 degrees Fahrenheit greater than the 20th-century average of 60.4 degrees, according to data released by NOAA. July just beat out the previous record, set in July 2016, by 0.02 of a degree Fahrenheit, which was later tied in 2019 and 2020.

In a statement, Rick Spinrad, NOAA’s administrator, said July is normally the warmest month of the year, “but July 2021 outdid itself.”
“This new record adds to the disturbing and disruptive path that climate change has set for the globe,” he said.
The new July data was released days after a United Nations scientific report warned that a hotter future was a certainty but that there was still a small window for preventing an even more dangerous future.
All wildfires in Turkey taken under control: two year hunting ban in Muğla and Antalya

Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said on August 12 that all wildfires across the country were contained and that authorities had decided to suspend hunting activities in the fire-affected areas of southern Antalya and southwestern Mugla provinces for two years.
Pakdemirli’s remarks came at a news conference in which he, along with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez, spoke on the wildfires that have been ravaging across the country for the past two weeks.
He said that cooling efforts were still underway.
