Türkiye coal mine explosion kills 41, injures 11
Forty-one people have died following an explosion in a coal mine in northern Türkiye, the country’s president says.
The discovery of the final missing body brings the rescue operation to an end, more than 20 hours after Friday’s deadly blast.
Earlier the interior minister said 58 people working in the mine when the blast went off were rescued or got out by themselves.
Around 110 people were in the mine at the time of Friday’s blast, almost half of them at more than 300m (984ft) deep.
Emergency crews had worked through the night, digging through rock to try to reach survivors.
Video footage showed miners emerging blackened and bleary-eyed accompanied by rescuers at the facility in Amasra, on the Black Sea coast.
Family and friends of the missing could also be seen at the mine, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been visiting the site in Bartin province, along with other ministers, and confirmed the final missing person had been found dead.
Authorities said Turkish prosecutors have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion but initial indications were that the blast was caused by firedamp, a term referring to methane forming an explosive mixture in coal mines.

Vineyard Festival cancelled due to mine explosion
The Yeşilüzümlü Vineyard Festival, which was due to take place on October 14-16, was cancelled by the Fethiye District Governorship due to the explosion of the mine in the Amasra.
Fethiye District Governorship made a written statement, “Due to the mining explosion in the Turkish Hard Coal Institution Amasra establishment, the “Yeşilüzümlü Vineyard Festival” has been cancelled. We wish God’s mercy on our citizens who lost their lives in the mine explosion in Bartın/Amasra District, our condolences to their relatives, and a speedy recovery to our injured brothers.”

British tourist miraculously survives 6,000ft paragliding plunge onto rocks in Türkiye
A British tourist miraculously survived a dangerous fall in Türkiye as he crashed straight onto rocks after his chute failed to stay up. His condition is reported to be non-life-threatening.
A paragliding British tourist has miraculously survived a terrifying 6,000ft plunge from a mountain onto rocks.
The 27-year-old took off from the 1,800m (5,905ft) high runway on Babadağ Mountain in the popular tourist resort of Ölüdeniz in Fethiye District, Muğla Province, south-western Türkiye
Paragliding is known for being an extreme sport where the pilot foot launches and glides off a slope, once in the air the pilot sits securely in a harness and glides.
But as he launched himself, he suddenly realised that his chute was not in the air as it should be.
Within moments of trying to gain momentum in the air, his chute had apparently failed.
Suddenly he plummeted towards the ground and crashed straight onto rocks.
Türkiye is known for being one of the best places in the world for Paragliding. The Babadağ mountain is one the highest commercial launch sites in the world.

Wild boars roam Bodrum looking for food
Hungry wild boars are regularly roaming the streets of Bodrum in Muğla looking for food.
The hungry boars took advantage of the fact that Cumhuriyet Street in the centre of Bodrum was empty on Friday night and foraged for food, eating leaves and wood chips. The wild boars then disappeared back into the mountains.
Entire families of wild boars have become a regular sight in many towns as they venture from the surrounding mountainous areas in search of food.

Turkish parliament OKs bill to ‘fight disinformation’
The Turkish parliament adopted a law seeking up to three years in prison for those accused of spreading disinformation on Oct. 13.
The law proposed by the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) contains wide-ranging provisions covering domestic journalism as well as social media.
With a new article added to the Turkish Penal Code, the crime of “publicly disseminating misleading information to the public” has been defined.
According to the article, “a person who publicly disseminates false information about the internal and external security, public order and general health of the country, in a way that is disturbing the public peace, with the sole motive of creating anxiety, fear or panic among the public” will be given a prison sentence of one to three years.
If the crime is committed by hiding the real identity of the perpetrator or within the framework of the activities of an organization, the penalty will be increased by half.
Within the scope of the obligation to have a representative on social media platforms, it will no longer be sufficient for the representative in question to be a Turkish citizen only, as the representative will have to reside in Türkiye.
The social network provider will be obliged to act according to the principle of accountability, ensure transparency in the implementation of the law, and provide all necessary information and documents regarding the performance of the law to the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) when requested.
