Seismicity study in Izmir

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is carrying out Turkey’s most comprehensive seismicity study along the Izmir coastline.

A protocol was signed with the Izmir Institute of Technology, METU and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University to conduct seismicity research in Izmir and to develop a soil behaviour model.

Taking samples by drilling at 37 points in a 100-kilometre radius along the Izmir coastline, experts will be able to reveal what kind of earthquake danger Izmir is facing.

The METU Marine Paleoseismology Research team is taking a core sample from the seabed, approximately 2.5 kilometres off Gümüldür, using the METU drilling platform. When the drilling works are completed, information about earthquakes in the past will be analysed and experts will be able to make sound predictions about earthquakes the faults will produce in the future.

Banu Dayangaç, Head of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department, said that the research is one of the most important projects initiated to make Izmir a safe city and reduce disaster risks.

The research is expected to be completed in 2024.

Turkey slashes interest rates by 150 basis points despite inflation at 83%

Turkey’s central bank on Thursday slashed its key interest rate by 150 basis points for the third consecutive month of cuts, from 12% to 10.5% — despite Turkish inflation at more than 83%.

Market analysts expected a 100 basis point cut, so the move still managed to take many by surprise despite the increasing regularity of Turkey’s interest rate reductions. Consumer prices for the country of 84 million people climbed to a new 24-year high of 83.45% in September, though many people living in Turkey say prices for basic goods have in some cases more than tripled in the past year.

The policy consistently provokes criticism and bafflement from economists and plays a major role in the dramatic weakening of Turkey’s currency, the lira, which has lost roughly 28% of its value against the dollar this year.

Turkey’s central bank signaled that another rate cut would follow in November but that may be the last reduction, saying that financial conditions had to remain “supportive” of growth amid a weakening demand environment. It added that slowing foreign demand and pressures on the manufacturing industry are being “closely monitored,” and that “credit, collateral and liquidity policy options will continue to be implemented.”
