Over the winter Fethiye Times will be taking you on a series of walks in the area.
The cooler months are a great time of year for getting out your walking boots and exploring the local area on foot. There are many delightful walks in and around Fethiye that suit all levels of experience, from gentle strolls to major hikes.
On Sunday I was invited to walk with a group of friends. Our plan was to walk from Ovacık, along the first stretch of the Lycian Way, to Faralya. According to the Sunday Times the Lycian Way is one of the ten most beautiful long distance hikes of the world so it was an opportunity too good to miss.
The Lycian Way – Ovacık to Faralya
The Lycian Way is a 509 km way-marked coastal walk from Fethiye to Antalya. Mild temperatures mean it can be walked throughout the winter months. The best time to walk the Lycian Way is February-May or September-November.
The path
Starting at Ölüdeniz, the first stretch is relatively easy walking.
The path soon narrows and becomes steeper
The scenery
Though not short on arduous climbs, the effort is worth it to see the jaw-dropping, dramatic scenery.

Our ascent should have ended at Halil’s cafe, from where we had planned to go back the way we came. Being such a bunch of enthusiasts, we decided to go on and it was suggested that we should hike up to the take off point at 1300m and then hike back down the road.
After eight hours, 15km and 1300m, this was the sight that greeted us…worth every aching muscle. And we had transport waiting to take us back down the mountain!
