July 15 coup attempt anniversary marked across the world

Thousands of people across the world joined ceremonies to mark the defeated coup attempt in Turkey. At least 250 people were killed and more than 2,000 wounded during the night of July 15, 2016, when a faction of the military deployed fighter jets, attack helicopters, tanks, and other heavy weapons against the government.

Turks took to the streets in all 81 Turkish provinces on Saturday evening to honor the victims, and highlight the resistance they used to put down the coup bid.

In Fethiye, around 2000 people gathered in Özgecan Aslan Park to take part in a walk to Beşkaza (the town square), where a ceremony was held to honour the victims.

Speaking at the ceremony, Fethiye District Governor Ekrem Çalık said

“The betrayal of the people we have trained and armed to protect our nationality, patriotism and our country is a painful thing for our nationality”

Extensive security measures were taken by the police however the event passed without incident.

350 pot plants seized in Fethiye

Almost 350 cannabis roots were seized in the Fethiye district of southwestern Mugla province during a nationwide anti-narcotics operation on Friday.

A different kind of high

Fethiye Gendarmerie Command Intelligence Team were investigating information received about cannabis growing high on Babadağ when they found a tent and a bed in a field surrounded by wire mesh. On further investigation, the field with 350 cannabis roots was discovered.

A local man is being held for questioning.

A 29-year-old man was killed when his car crashed through safety barriers on the Fethiye to Ölüdeniz road on Friday.

The vehicle fell 100 meters down a cliff to the creek bed, crushing the car and killing the driver.

National Medical Rescue (UMKE), Search and Rescue Association (AKUT), Disaster Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), fire brigade and gendarmerie teams attended the accident, where it took three hours to cut the body free from the wreckage.

Initial investigations show the possibility that Tunca fell asleep at the wheel of the car as there were no brake marks on the road.

The driver has been named as Burhan Tunca who was married with two children.

Turkey tourism on the rebound

Tourism to Turkey is on the rebound after 18 months of crisis caused by a combination of terrorist attacks and political instability.

The number of arrivals hit 2.9 million in May, up 16% on the same month the previous year, according to government figures.

The number of visitors to Turkey fell by almost a third in 2016 to about 25 million – the lowest in nine years.

Numbers have picked up since rates were cut and the government stepped in with more than $500 million of state support last year.

The British Pound bought 4.63 Turkish Lira (TL) by the close of business on Friday.

The week before it was selling for 4.66TL.
