Turkey inflation slows on strong lira and oil prices

Charity News & Events – week ending 08 December 2018 - Çalış Christmas Fair

Turkey’s annual inflation slowed by more than expected in November thanks to a stronger lira and lower energy prices, fueling analysts’ expectations that the central bank will reverse course with lower interest rates.

November’s consumer price index increased 21.62% on year compared with a 15-year high of 25.24% in October. On month, CPI fell 1.44% compared with a 2.67% rise the previous month, Turkey’s state statistics agency said Monday.

The lira traded 0.5% higher against the U.S. dollar at 5.1590 after the data release.

The Turkish currency recently rallied in line with emerging-market currencies on the back of lower oil prices and after Turkey’s central bank sharply raised interest rates in September to help curb runaway inflation and defend the currency. The rally comes amid a thawing of tensions between the U.S. and Turkey after Ankara agreed to release a detained U.S. pastor.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 08 December 2018

An ancient Roman sarcophagus has been found in the Aegean region of Bodrum after a landslide last week.

Officials at the Bodrum Castle’s Museum of Underwater Archeology found the late Roman tomb after a landslide in the town, part of the province of Muğla along the Aegean coast.

Experts from the Museums Directorate and the municipality have started working in the area to date the sarcophagus and gather more details.

The Bodrum Castle, constructed on the site of much earlier ancient fortifications, was built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century.

The adjacent Museum of Underwater Archaeology features collections of amphora, ancient glass, bronze, clay, and iron items, and is said to be the biggest museum of its kind.
