International Women’s Day
The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on 28 February 1909. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
International Women’s Day (8 March) is now celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
The theme for International Women’s Day this year, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, puts innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality. #BalanceforBetter

First ever prayer held at Turkey’s largest mosque in Istanbul
Hundreds of people attended the first ever prayer at the Çamlıca Mosque in Istanbul, following completion of its construction that started in 2013.
The faithful gathered at Turkey’s now largest mosque complex, which is visible to all from its perch on a hill on Istanbul’s Asian side, before sunrise Thursday to perform a Fajr, or dawn, prayer.
Binali Yıldırım, Istanbul mayor candidate for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) as well as former Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker, joined the faithful at the Çamlıca Mosque for the prayer.
“It turned out to be a great work of art. The mosque is a magnificent piece of work that will add beauty to Istanbul’s grandeur,” Yıldırım said after the prayer.
The mosque can accommodate up to 63,000 worshippers

Turkish Inflation Slows Below 20%

The government campaign to curtail rising food costs has paid off with a bigger-than-forecast decline in inflation.
According to data released by Turkstat on Monday, consumer prices in February rose 19.7 percent on the previous year, an improvement on the increase of 20.4 percent in January.
“A stable lira and various short-term measures implemented by the administration to rein in inflation, particularly in terms of food prices, have started to yield effects,” said Rabobank strategist Piotr Matys.
Faced with the fastest surge in food prices since at least 2004, municipality-run stalls opened in large cities last month to offer vegetables and fruit at heavy discounts helping move the needle on inflation.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages make up the largest component of the consumer-price index, accounting for 23.29 percent of the total.

Driving after Brexit: What you need to know
The BBC published an article on Saturday about driving after Brexit. This is an excerpt relating to driving in Turkey…
If Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement is passed, UK licences will still be valid for visiting EEA countries.
If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, then the situation gets complicated.
There will be changes to the types of International Driving Permit (IDP) you need to be able to drive in countries outside the EEA. If you want to visit Turkey by car before 29 March, you will need a 1949 IDP – but after 29 March, you will need a 1968 IDP.
