Two killed in paragliding accident
The Turkish media has released a video of the last moments of Pakistani paraglider Zarak Zaheer and his co-pilot Mustafa Kemal Öztürk before plunging to death in a paragliding accident in the Fethiye district in Turkey’s southwestern province of Muğla on April 15.
According to Hürriyet Daily News, Öztürk and Zaheer went on a tandem paraglide in foggy weather conditions off a point on Babadağ Mountain, which is 1,965 meters high.
They disappeared shortly after the jump, the news report said. Other pilots at the paragliding area noticed that something was wrong.
A gendarmerie drone spotted the men’s bodies on the rocks. Rescue teams who arrived in the scene confirmed that they were both dead.
The bodies were later recovered by a military helicopter and taken to a hospital in Fethiye for forensic examination.

New system to ensure foreign plated vehicles pay highway tolls in Turkey
A new system to ensure foreign plated vehicles entering Turkey pay highway tolls is to be implemented by the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry.
The pilot for this scheme is the Kapıkule Border Gate, and vehicles with foreign plates who do not pay the toll fee will be fined.
Generally, motorway tolls in Turkey are dealt with electronically and you will not have to pay in cash at the time. Rather, you must enroll in the HGS automatic toll system so that you have an electronic-chip sticker or toll transponder mounted on the upper middle of your windscreen. This applies to privately owned Turkish cars, non-Turkish cars and rentals alike. More…

Wall decorations, olive seeds and a beach clean
Students from Notre- Dame de Sion and Saint-Michel French High Schools Sustainable Living / Environment Club had an unforgettable time last week when they visited Fethiye to participate in a series of activities.
The students attended a festival held in Ali Yonca Döğerli Primary School where they read educational tales prepared on nature by Ali Yonca Dölylili Elementary School students. They went on to paint wall decorations and plant olive trees.
The events were attended by the Seydikemer Gendarmerie Commander and former deputy of Muğla, Ali Döğerli and his wife, along with parents and other students.
Students also carried out a beach clean at Gemiler Bay near Kayaköy.

Fishing season ends in Turkey
Turkey’s fishing season ended this week (April 15) with a countrywide ban effective until Sept. 1.
During breeding seasons, fishing is illegal in some areas; this depends on the region and type of fish. The fishing ban generally lasts from 1 April to 1 September. Sea turtles, dolphins, sandbar sharks, black coral, cuttlefish, and sea horses are protected, and it is illegal to fish them.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sarı, an academic from Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, told Anadolu Agency that the “efficiency” from the Marmara Sea in terms of fishes caught was not as good in comparison to those from other seas this past season.
Sarı also warned that the biggest problem in the Marmara is poaching, urging authorities to increase their inspections at the seas.

Hotels cutting down on food waste to receive an award
Food waste is a major concern at a time when both obesity and hunger claim lives, and apart from personal consumption, excessive consumption of food in tourism facilities raises alarms. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) say some 1.7 billion loaves of bread and 18 million tons of fruits and vegetable go to waste every year in Turkey. All-inclusive deals offered by hotels aggravate the situation as they offer buffet meals for guests, and according to the platform, buffet menus provide 5 kilograms of food per person, no matter how little of it they can consume.
An initiative against food waste wants to do for hotels what Blue Flag awards do for beaches to curb food waste.
Hotels cutting down on waste will be awarded Orange Flags by the Prevention of Food Waste Platform, a nonprofit organisation cooperating with businesses and ministries on the issue.
Some 250 hotels in key tourism destinations are expected to join the program in the first stage, and organizers aim to include a wider network of hotels in the project.
Platform director Ali Akgün told Anadolu Agency (AA) that food waste costs Turkey TL 214 billion yearly and their project aims to curb 70 percent of food waste within five years.
The program will focus on how to recycle food and raise awareness among hotel customers on the issue so that they do not dump food they pick from buffet services. Plates used for serving food will be smaller, and hotel staff will be trained on how to prevent waste, while hotels will display posters raising awareness of the issue. The program will also include children’s entertainers, a staple of hotels in vacation resorts, who will educate the children of hotel guests about food waste.
“This is actually not only about dumping food you don’t eat. Eating more than you should is another aspect of the issue, as it leads to obesity, a life-threatening issue for many,” Akgün added.
Organizers plan to include more places in the fight against food waste, from schools to hospitals and military bases.
Hotels with an Orange Flag will maintain a recycling process and a process for the proper purchase of food to prevent waste.
Food banks will also be set up to deliver food that isn’t consumed to needy families. Organizers also plan to hold a series of conferences and seminars across the country to raise awareness on the issue.
