Muğla fire departments respond to 1606 events over the summer

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 21 September 2019

Muğla fire departments have been kept very busy this year with the number of wildfires that have occurred. Their duties don’t stop at fighting fires though and they are on call 24/7 to attend all sorts of events.

Between June and September, Muğla fire departments have responded to 1606 calls.

The teams have attended 783 grass-trash-stubble fires, 95 forest fires, and 286 other fires, including house, vehicle and boats. They have also been called out to 31 floods, 248 animal rescues and 163 traffic accident rescues.

Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Osman Gürün said “Muğla is one of our unique cities, surrounded by seas, with 1480 km of coastline, 68 percent of which is forest and endemic plants. Unfortunately, we have experienced big forest fires due to carelessness, unconscious stubble burning in the fields and many other reasons. The disastrous forest fires in Dalaman-Fethiye, Milas, Bodrum were extinguished by the joint efforts of Metropolitan and Municipality teams on land and in the air. We must work to prevent forest fires in our city and our country and to raise awareness of our citizens. Most importantly, necessary measures should be taken for the effective fight against the fire. I would also like to thank all the fires teams for their dedication and hard work.”

Meanwhile, according to a news report in Al-Monitor, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry are looking at amphibious jets after coming under heavy criticism for refusing to use three CL-215 fire-fighting planes owned by the Turkish Aeronautical Association (THK), saying the planes weren’t safe. THK issued a damning statement criticising the ministry and alleged that, although THK planes were ready to be used, the ministry had refused its offer.

Turkish high court to review Wikipedia appeal against ban

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 21 September 2019

Turkey’s highest court began considering an appeal by Wikipedia on Wednesday. The appeal is aiming to reverse the Turkish government’s more than two-year ban on the online encyclopedia.

Turkey blocked Wikipedia in April 2017, accusing it of being part of a “smear campaign” against Turkey, after the website refused to remove content that allegedly portrayed Turkey as a country supporting the Islamic State group and terrorist organizations.

Access to Wikipedia and all its language editions was blocked under a law that allows the government to ban websites it deems pose a national security threat.

Wikipedia declined to remove content from the community-generated site, citing its opposition to censorship. It petitioned the Turkish Constitutional Court in May 2017 after talks with Turkish officials and a challenge in lower courts failed. Wikipedia is also appealing the ban at the European Court of Human Rights. More…

It was definitely the end of the summer in the Black Sea region on Thursday when snow fell in Giresun, Trabzon, Ardahan and on the Gumuşhane plateau.

The weather had turned cold the week before, bringing up to five centimeters of snow which quickly turned Giresun’s highlands white.

You might want to start planning a trip as Turkey’s Black Sea region is a must-see in the winter.
